Education is centralized. It includes eight years in primary school, four years in secondary school and four years in a general university degree programme. Completion rate remains relatively low and in secondary school particularly, there is a huge discrepancy between the number of girls and boys who complete school.

The Life Skills Education Syllabus series is what is currently used in schools and has made improvements over the years. The purpose of this series, which are designed for children in and out of school, is to teach young people how to form healthy relationships so that they can avoid being infected with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.


HIV and AIDS, maternal and child health are priority areas for the government. There is still an unmet need for family planning and use of contraceptives. In addition, Kenya has the highest child marriage rates in the world, which negatively impacts the state of young women’s health.


Gender based violence is common in Kenya with over 39% of women aged 15-49 reporting having been abused by husbands or partners. There has been an increase in the number of HIV tested people due to the increase in opportunities for testing and counselling. Many of these services and others are free. In addition, post-exposure prophylaxis is also increasing.
