Overview

EDUCATION

More than 25% of children between 6 and 10 years old are not enrolled in primary school.  The low net enrollment rates in secondary school shows low efficiency within the system. In fact, only 23% of 11-14 year olds that should be in secondary school are enrolled. Significant drop out rates are recorded in primary schools, especially in recent years. Life Skills training, which is expected to equip young people with skills to help protect themselves against challenges, like HIV infections, is provided throughout all levels of the education system.

SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

There is a high birth rate among young people, with an estimated 147 births per 1,000 adolescents. This means that approximately 147 female adolescents out of a 1,000 are at risk of contracting HIV or other STIs; and as research has identified, the practice of sexual intercourse at a young age is associated with increased risk of HIV infection. The risk is likely to increase, as comprehensive correct knowledge of HIV is also quite low among young people. HIV prevalence is very low in Madagascar but there are a significantly high percentage of young people who are sexually active before the age of 15.

Most sexually transmitted infections are treated in both public and private health facilities. These facilities also provide sexual and reproductive health services to youth.
