In Rwanda, there is a real increase and coverage of education over the past 10 years with better capacity from pre-primary education to vocational education and training. The country has sustained a strong political commitment to improving education access and quality, which places the country on a planned projection for quality education for all. There is no specific curriculum for sexual and reproductive health but the current curriculum review has considered the integration of comprehensive sexuality education.
The prevalence of HIV among adults is 3%, making it a generalized epidemic. The HIV rate among women is much higher as compared to men. Approximately half of all young people (age 15-24) can correctly identify ways of preventing sexual transmission of HIV.
Youth-friendly health centres are not adequately meeting the needs of people yet. Access to sexual and reproductive health services by out of school young people is limited, due to weak coordination of activities targeting these groups by community-based organizations.
