Tanzania

OVERVIEW

EDUCATION

Access to education in Tanzania is improving. Only a small portion of young people enrolled in primary school do not finish. Literacy rates among young people is also quite high. At both the primary and secondary levels, young people receive optional HIV and AIDS life skills education, however, only 15% to 25% of primary and secondary schools cover the main issues of the curriculum.

SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

The government has collaborated with non-governmental organizations to provide sexual reproductive health services to young people. In addition, UNESCO provides technical and financial support to strengthen the capacity of teacher training colleges to deliver these services.

Prevalence of multiple and concurrent partnerships among young people remain high in Tanzania: less than 50% of young people reported using a condom during their last sexual encounter. This may be one factor for the high adolescent fertility levels.

A National Adolescent Reproductive Health Strategy (2010-2015) has provided a framework for increasing access to youth-friendly health services, information and education.
