Comprehensive Sexuality Education in Teacher Training in Eastern and Southern Africa

Since 2010, the UN Interagency Task Team for young people in the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) region has supported Ministries of Education (MOEs) in the ESA region to strengthen the sexuality education (SE) component of current life skills-based HIV education programmes. This collaboration has been instrumental in moving the comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) agenda forward.

If birth rates in Africa decline rapidly, as it has been the case in other regions, the age structure will change to one dominated by more young people of working age. Coupled with the positive economic outlook for the continent, the change in the age structure will provide enormous potential for economic growth and structural transformation if African countries make the right investments in human and social capital for youth development. These potential gains can be realized through a demographic dividend, which refers to the accelerated economic growth that countries can harness as a result of the change in age structure following demographic transition.

Sexuality Education: A Ten-Country Review of School Curricula

This collaborative regional curriculum scan, which was conducted in 2011, seeks to assess the content, quality, and delivery methods of sexuality education (SE) curricula in ten ESA countries and aims to ensure that the reviews help countries to develop curricula designed to not only increase comprehensive knowledge among young people, but to empower them to adopt protective behaviours, such as refusing unwanted sex, delaying sex, using condoms and testing for HIV.

The Steering Group developed a theory of change, which was used to identify and assess indicators and related assessment tools to measure SRH and HIV linkages and provide a thematic structure to the compendium. The areas in the theory of change can broadly be categorised as outputs (enabling environment, integrated service delivery and stronger health systems), outcomes (reduced stigma and discrimination and gender-based violence, increased access to and utilisation of services, improved efficiency) and impact (improved health, human rights and quality of life).
