Synthesis Report on the Demographic Dividend in Africa (2015)

Synthesis Report on the Demographic Dividend in Africa (2015)

If birth rates in Africa decline rapidly, as it has been the case in other regions, the age structure will change to one dominated by more young people of working age. Coupled with the positive economic outlook for the continent, the change in the age structure will provide enormous potential for economic growth and structural transformation if African countries make the right investments in human and social capital for youth development. These potential gains can be realized through a demographic dividend, which refers to the accelerated economic growth that countries can harness as a result of the change in age structure following demographic transition.

International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education (Volume 1)

International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education (Volume 1)

Few young people receive adequate preparation for their sexual lives. This leaves them potentially vulnerable to coercion, abuse and exploitation, unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Many young people approach adulthood faced with conflicting and confusing messages about sexuality and gender. This is often exacerbated by embarrassment, silence and disapproval of open discussion of sexual matters by adults, including parents and teachers, at the very time when it is most needed.

A Standards-driven approach to improve the quality of health-care services for adolescents

Global initiatives are urging countries to prioritize quality as a way of reinforcing human rights-based approaches to health (iERG, 2013). Yet, evidence from both high- and middle-low income countries shows that services for adolescents are highly fragmented, poorly coordinated and uneven in quality (WHO, 2014). Evidence suggests that adolescents experience many barriers to health care (WHO/UNAIDS, 2015).
